Event Details:

The Sunita Sanghi Centre of Aging and Neurodegenerative Diseases (SCAN Centre) IIT Bombay, organised its Annual Symposium on 9–10 January 2026 to commemorate its third anniversary, with the theme “Neurodegenerative Disorders in India: Current Practices and Challenges.” The symposium was inaugurated by the Honourable Director, IIT Bombay, Prof. Shireesh Kedare, followed by insightful addresses from the Dean (R&D), Prof. Sachin C. Patwardhan, the Dean (ACR), Prof. Upendra V. Bhandarkar, and inspiring words from Mr. Sharad Sanghi, the Centre’s esteemed donor. Prof. Samir K. Maji, Professor in the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering and Professor-in-Charge of the SCAN Centre, and Organiser of the Symposium, presented an overview of the Centre and highlighted the ongoing research initiatives at SCAN.

This year, the symposium brought together clinicians and researchers to discuss current challenges and advances in brain and neurodegenerative disorders. Topics included Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s dementia, epilepsy, and disorders affecting movement, memory, and behaviour. Speakers highlighted how early diagnosis, improved imaging, biomarkers, and new treatment approaches can help improve patient care. Discussions also focused on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, advanced brain imaging, and laboratory models, along with insights from the LASI study in India.

The symposium provided a dynamic platform for knowledge sharing, interdisciplinary engagement, and meaningful collaboration, reaffirming SCAN’s commitment to advancing research and clinical practice in aging and neurodegenerative diseases in India. Participants from diverse institutions across the country came together to present posters, exchange research ideas, and receive valuable feedback, fostering a strong spirit of academic exchange. Importantly, the audience also included caregivers and family members of individuals affected by neurodegenerative disorders, who had the opportunity to interact with leading neurologists and receive clarity on their concerns. The collective contributions of speakers, participants, and attendees played a vital role in making the symposium a resounding success, and the SCAN team extends its sincere gratitude to all who contributed.
