A journey to combat neurodegenerative diseases.

About Us

The Sunita Sanghi Centre of Aging and Neurodegenerative Diseases (SCAN) at IIT Bombay was established in February 2022, to advance the knowledge of aging and neurodegeneration, which affects millions of people worldwide.

Our main objective is to understand the molecular and pathological basis of disease mechanisms and develop innovative therapeutics/tools against neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD).

“The world is witnessing an unprecedented surge in aging populations, presenting profound public health challenges and unparalleled opportunities for innovation and resilience. At the SCAN Centre, we are driven by a bold vision to unravel the complexities of neurodegenerative diseases and create pathways toward healthier, more vibrant lives for people of all ages.

Through pioneering research, early diagnostic breakthroughs, and dynamic collaborations, we aim to transform the narrative of aging—turning its challenges into powerful catalysts for growth and societal progress. Mr. Sharad Sanghi’s extraordinary generosity has made this transformative mission possible. His unwavering support empowers us to lead groundbreaking advancements, offering millions worldwide hope and a brighter future.”

Prof. Shireesh B Kedare

IITB Director

“As the Indian population ages and its growth slows down, the burden of neurodegenerative diseases will increase. Early detection and slowing the onset of such diseases will be key levers towards effective therapy, and this Centre will go a long way in helping us overcome this challenge. Mr. Sanghi’s donation will enable us to embark on this journey and we are deeply grateful to him for his generosity.”

Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri

Previous IITB Director

SCAN Symposium 2025

The Sunita Sanghi Centre of Aging and Neurodegenerative Diseases (SCAN Centre), IIT Bombay, held its Annual Symposium on 9–10 January 2026 to mark its third anniversary, themed *“Neurodegenerative Disorders in India: Current Practices and Challenges.”* The symposium was inaugurated by the Director, IIT Bombay, Prof. Shireesh Kedare, with addresses from the Deans, Prof. Sachin C. Patwardhan and Prof. Upendra V. Bhandarkar, and Mr. Sharad Sanghi. Prof. Samir K. Maji, Professor-in-Charge of SCAN, presented an overview of the Centre and its research initiatives. The event brought together clinicians and researchers to discuss advances and challenges in disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s dementia, and epilepsy, highlighting early diagnosis, biomarkers, imaging, and emerging technologies including AI. The symposium fostered interdisciplinary collaboration through talks, posters, and discussions, while also engaging caregivers and families, reinforcing SCAN’s commitment to advancing research and clinical care in neurodegenerative diseases in India.
