Talk by Dr. Vidya Shenoy

Dr. Vidya Shenoy is an esteemed Integrative Therapist specializing in Ageing and Dementia Care, delivered an insightful talk on “Dementia Awareness and Management.” She is the Hon. Secretary of the Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI) and the Founder of Smriti Vishvam: Universe of Memory Dementia Daycare Centre in Mumbai. Dr. Shenoy provided valuable insights into the fundamentals of dementia, the daily struggles faced by patients, and the crucial role of nutrition and care in improving their quality of life. She discussed the causes of dementia and illustrated her points through real-life cases. Emphasizing the importance of empathy in caregiving, she also shared practical tips for managing daily challenges. Key lifestyle recommendations included staying physically active, maintaining a healthy diet, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and scheduling regular medical check-ups. The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, where attendees with relatives facing dementia received personalized advice on addressing caregiving challenges effectively.

 Abstract:

Brain health is something that should be on all of our minds. After all, our brains help us maintain our health, navigate through life, and ultimately enjoy our lives. How can we preserve our brain function? Although significant strides have been made in this direction, most people have not thought about how to sustain their cognitive functions their ability to understand, remember, judge, and use language. While there are no silver bullets, in this talk, we will discuss various strategies that may help build our cognitive reserves so we can live long, fulfilling lives.
